Solution

An .htaccess file is a plain text text file called ".htaccess". It is most often uploaded to the document root of the web site. The commands contained therein are read by the web server and apply to the directory containing the .htaccess file and all its subdirectories.

"Unformatted" means that only text characters, but no format commands such as "bold", "italic" etc. may be used.

In Windows, you can create such a file using the Windows text editor. If you are creating the file with a word processor, such as Word, which usually also saves the character formatting, save the file in plain text format. On Linux, the vi editor is useful for creating text files.

If you would like to create the .htaccess file online in your webspace right now, simply click on the "File Manager" icon and then on "New" -> "Create File". Name the file .htaccess, save the file that is still empty, then click on the filename to edit the content.
